Military children "Read for the Win"

By Airman Gabrielle Spalding 11th Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base Andrews Library hosted an Olympic-themed parade and field day here, July 22.

The event was part of the Department of Defense-Morale, Welfare and Recreation 2016 Summer Reading Program “Read for the Win,” a concept encouraging children to read during summer months.

“It’s important to keep children reading throughout the summer,” said Cheryl Gritton, JBA Library director. “Continuing to read keeps them learning and growing and prepares them for the new school year.”

During the event, there were a variety of sports-themed activities for children, and a “Parade of Nations,” where families walked around the block, some wearing a flag representing different countries of the world, or playing with a noise maker.

Approximately 80 people attended the event including Pam Kiumarsi, the wife of a retired military member, and her two young boys who are home for the summer.

“The reading program has motivated my boys to read more books,” Kiumarsi said.
