Protect the Power!

By Airman Gabrielle Spalding 11th Wing Public Affairs

October marks the National 2016 Energy Action Month observance.

The goals of Energy Action Month are to increase awareness about energy consumption and encourage energy-saving actions in Airmen, civilians, and their families.

Throughout the month of October, the 11th Civil Engineering Squadron energy management team published various infographics on the JBA Facebook page, with tips on how to save energy, as well as, hosted an energy action day at Home Traditions, where the team provided an interactive booth, passed out flyers, offered energy savings tips, and conducted live demonstrations on ways to conserve energy.

“We all play a key role in accomplishing our energy goals by making energy conscious decisions throughout our day,” said Capt. Tommy Le, Joint Base Andrews Energy Action Month officer. “It’s as simple as turning off your computer monitors when not in use, turning off lights in your office when you leave for a meeting, or to carpool whenever possible.”

Turning off lights, when not in use or when natural daylight is sufficient, can reduce lighting expenses by 10 to 40 percent, according to the U.S. Air Force Installations, Environment and Energy website.

The 11th CES energy management team has put together many projects aimed at reducing the base’s energy consumption. Installing solar heating wall systems on hangars, which will redistribute heat that is normally lost through the walls, and upgrading street lighting fixtures with efficient LED fixtures and bulbs, are just a few ways that will save the base thousands on utility bills.

“As Airmen, conserving energy wherever possible is just as important as any other mission we do,” said Le. “Working in a constrained fiscal environment, any dollar saved on energy is an extra dollar the Air Force can budget towards other priorities.”

The Air Force hopes the energy efficient actions highlighted during Energy Action Month will become good habits, leading to increased mission effectiveness and reduced costs.
