Fly, Fight, Donate: JBA and Dover AFB face-off in blood collection challenge

Armed Services Blood Program

Airman and community members from Joint Base Andrews, Maryland and Dover Air Force Base, Delaware are facing off in the first-ever Andrews vs. Dover Blood Collection Challenge. A collection team from the Armed Services Blood Bank Center in Bethesda, Maryland will travel to each location and the installation that donates the most blood will take home a commemorative paddle.

“This is a great way to encourage donors to roll up their sleeves,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Jerome Vinluan, Armed Services Blood Program deputy director. “These two installations are great supporters of the military blood program; so challenging them to face off in a competition like this will surely be a great motivation for them to donate even more. Fly. Fight. Donate!”

All blood collected at the blood drives will directly support ill or injured service members and their families worldwide. A tri-service organization, the ASBP is the official blood collection, manufacturing and transfusion program for the U.S. military. The mission of the ASBP is to provide quality blood products and services for all worldwide customers in both peace and war.

Mark your calendars now! This is an event you don’t want to miss out on.

“In line with our legacy to ‘Deliver Excellence,’ Team Dover remains committed to supporting our fellow Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines deployed downrange,” said Air Force Col. Ethan Griffin, 436th Airlift Wing commander. “The choice to give blood to the Armed Services Blood Program delivers the gift of life not only to men and women in the theater of conflict, but to our family members residing all over the world! We extend a genuine thanks to those members of Team Dover supporting this great cause.”

According to Donna Onwona, ASBBC blood donor recruiter, the goal is to raise awareness about the ASBP and ensure that blood is available for ill or injured service members both in theater and at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Fort Belvoir Community Hospital whenever it is needed.

“The team from America's Airfield is passionate about delivering capability to the warfighter while representing our nation at the highest levels,” said Air Force Col. E. John “Dragon” Teichert, 11th Wing and Joint Base Andrews commander. “Our commitment to deliver blood to the warfighter as a part of the Armed Services Blood Program falls in line with this passion. We will do so with gusto while representing our nation's care and concern for members who serve our nation and the family members who serve alongside of them.”
