Andrews wraps up AFAF campaign

By Air Force Assistance Fund committee

The 2007 Air Force Assistance Fund's "Commitment to Caring" campaign ends today.

"Our goal was $69,440, but Andrews overwhelmingly exceeded it by collecting $81,313," said Tech. Sgt. Michael R. Groder, AFAF assistant project officer.

During the campaign, the Andrews family came together to help their own by unselfishly volunteering many hours to solicit cash donations or participate in the many fundraisers held by individual squadrons, as well as the end of campaign fund run put together by Chuck Rose, 316th Services Squadron fitness center director.

"This was an outstanding team effort" said Capt. Robert A. Schlesiger, AFAF installation project officer. "Every unit's project officer and key workers' efforts were absolutely essential to achieving our goal. We also received several donations way beyond the expected individual contribution. I want to say thank you to those of you whose thoughtful generosity not only helped us exceed our goal, but will help ensure that our charities have strong financial backing so that they may continue their good work supporting those of us in need."

While only Active Duty, Guard and Reserve Airmen were approached for donations, the entire Andrews community united to make this years AFAF campaign one of the most successful in recent history, said Sergeant Groder.

During the campaign many individuals stepped up and put forth such an unbelievable effort that it's hard to single out any individual but we did have some extremely outstanding performers like 1st Lt. Kathryn R. Hannah, 79th Medical Wing.

"This is such an important cause to be able to raise money for charities that specifically target active duty Air Force personnel their families as well as, Guard, Reserve and retired personnel that I am honored to be able to participate," said Lieutenant Hannah.

There are four official Air Force charities, but a person may contribute to any of the four choices.

The Air Force Aid Society provides Airmen and their families with worldwide emergency financial assistance, education assistance and an array of base level community-enhancement programs.

The Air Force Enlisted Village Indigent Widows' Fund supports the Air Force Village in Shalimar, Fla. The fund provides rent subsidy and other support to indigent widows and widowers of retired enlisted people 55 and older.

The Air Force Villages Indigent Widows' Fund supports the Air Force Village in San Antonio, a life-care community for retired officers, spouses, widows or widowers and family members.

The General and Mrs. Curtis E. LeMay Foundation provides rent and financial assistance to indigent widows and widowers of officers and enlisted people in their own homes and communities.

Although Andrews' campaign came to a close April 20, the Air Force extended the campaign to today. If you haven't found an opportunity to donate, but still want to, visit the AFAF web site at http://www.afassistancefund.org/.
