Dorm Residents start "shootin' some b-ball outside of the school"

By Airman 1st Class Joshua R. M. Dewberry 11th Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base Andrews dorm residents can enjoy outdoor sports in their own backyard with new basketball and volleyball courts completed just in time for summer. The courts were officially opened on June 26 after a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Approximately 50 Airmen and Sailors attended the ceremony and participated in the first matches on the new courts.

"We wanted the best for our dorm residents, so we took all the necessary steps to make sure the project was built with care and professionalism," said Kirk Kessler, 11th Civil Engineer project manager. "We had four to seven people out there each day we were working on this project."

The abnormal weather conditions this past winter, along with meeting the Maryland Department of the Environment safety standards, pushed back initial plans for completing construction, according to Kessler.

The courts took approximately 300 days to complete. However, dorm residents were elated to learn they could walk across the parking lot to play a game whenever they wanted.

"These new courts boost morale for the dorms because it gets people out of their rooms and gets Airmen more active," said Senior Airman Joey Carfagno, 11th Logistics Readiness Squadron logistics planner. "I was so happy to hear we finally had a court we could call our own."
