Survivor Benefits Plan (SBP)

Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP)

The SBP is a monthly annuity that is normally paid to the spouse upon the death of an Active Duty (AD) member or upon the death of a retiree.  The beneficiary of the annuity can also be a child or a designated individual if no spouse.  While on AD members are covered 100% with zero premiums.  However, before a member retires an election for SBP must be made.  The retiree must attend a one-on-one briefing at least 120 days prior to the retirement date.  The spouse is highly encouraged to attend the briefing.  Failure to take any action will automatically cause DFAS to start spouse premium deductions from retired pay.  If you are 6-months from your retirement effective date and you have not been contacted by your base SBP counselor you need to act now.
