West Fitness Center gets renovated

By Senior Airman Philip Bryant 11th Wing Public Affairs

The locker rooms inside the West Fitness Center at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, reopened Dec. 13 after three months of being closed for renovations.

Renovations began in May to improve long standing issues around the facility that will improve quality of life for patrons that utilize the facility.

The West Fitness Center is currently undergoing renovations that are scheduled to commence in February, 2017.

“The main parts that are being renovated are the ceilings, saunas, lockers, and heating ventilation and air conditioning units, in both the male and female locker rooms,” said Isaac Melendez, West Fitness Center complex director. “Shortly after, the main entrance doors, the floors and counter are being renovated as well.”

The next step in the renovation process will be construction to the main entrance, making the gym’s tactical area doors the temporary entrance.

“We’re putting money into the West Fitness Center to make sure it lasts another five to 10 years, with the hope that by that time we will have a new fitness center programed or at least designed,” said Kirk Kessler, 11th Civil Engineer Squadron Simplified Acquisition Base Engineer Resource manager. “These renovations are just to keep the existing facility operational.”

Improvements to the fitness center will provide updated, clean and working equipment within the locker rooms.
