JBA DeCA commissary celebrates food donation milestone

By Airman 1st Class Rustie Kramer 11th Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base Andrews and the Defense Commissary Agency celebrated the donation of its 30,000th pound of food to the Community Support Systems Baden Food Pantry, May 12.

The JBA commissary has donated an average of 300 pounds of food each week since June 2015 as part of the Mission Nutrition initiative between JBA and the CSS Baden Food Pantry under the Air Force Community Partnership (AFCP) Program.

“JBA has consistently worked hard, looking for ways to partner with the community,” said Boyd Rutherford, Maryland lieutenant governor. “In those efforts we have teamed to open the community and present food to those most in need.”

The donations feed approximately 40 to 70 hungry families in the Prince George’s County community twice a week.

“We can all see the immediate and positive impact Mission Nutrition has on those in need and we will continue to donate food to help improve the lives of our local community families,” said Col. E. John Teichert, 11th Wing and Joint Base Andrews commander.

Linda Elliot, JBA DeCA commissary manager, added that the donations by the commissary are in addition to the annual Feds Feed Families campaign that collets food donations to help food banks stay stocked throughout the summer.

“We take great stock in developing relationships with our local communities and the state of Maryland,” Teichert said. “In addition to Mission Nutrition, we have eight on-going partnerships with several more under development.”
