Honorary Commanders Program

By Airman 1st Class Noah Sudolcan 11th WG/PA

Joint Base Andrews held its annual Honorary Commanders Program induction ceremony in Hangar One March 19, 2019 here.

The program allows for squadron and group commanders from the base to work together with local community leaders to strengthen the bond between JBA members and the community off-base.

Four community leaders were presented certificates of induction during the 2019 Honorary Commanders Ceremony.

The JBA Honorary Commanders Program began in 1999 as an initiative to help increase public awareness of the armed forces and build relationships within the local community. The program was designed to help civic leaders understand JBA’s mission through events such as mission briefs and air shows.

“I’ll be honest, I can’t wait to attend this year’s air show.” said Suzi Guardia, Senior Advisor for Neighbor Engagement, Blue Star Families. “Being a part of the Honorary Commanders Program is one more way that I can continue my service [to military families] as I work to strengthen the bonds between the civilian and military worlds in my community.”

Honorary Commanders serve in two-year terms that aim to build bonds with the surrounding community and the patrons of JBA. After two years, Honorary Commanders are presented an Honorary Commander retirement certificate and have an opportunity to transition to the roll as an Andrews Ambassador.

Newest Honorary Commanders and Ambassadors:

Alexandra Desaulniers – Public relations and volunteer coordinator for Wreaths Across America National Cemetery Wreaths Project - Honorary Commander of the 11th Operations Group.

Dr. Gregory Gifford– Senior Pastor and School Chancellor of Riverdale Ministries – Honorary Commander for the 11th Wing Chapel.
