Honorary commanders visit America's Airfield

By Airman 1st Class Isabelle Churchill, 316th Wing Public Affairs

The 89th Airlift Wing hosted an immersion event for honorary commanders on Aug. 16, 2022, at Joint Base Andrews, Md.

Honorary commanders are active members of the local community who serve as leaders and have a deep rooted interest in military affairs. The Honorary Commanders Program encourages friendships between key leaders of the base's surrounding communities, JBA commanders and Airmen. The purpose of the event was to maintain relationships with these local leaders and the community, and highlight the mission of the 89th Airlift Wing, as well as mission partners and their role on Joint Base Andrews.

The event involved a mission brief by Col. Matthew Jones, 89th Airlift Wing commander, and a detailed tour of America’s Airfield, which included boarding a Boeing C-32, Boeing C-37, the Silver Bullet and the Steel Eagle. The group was taken to each corner of the airfield to learn about each unit’s role and their contributions to mission success.

The honorary commanders in attendance included Rosalind Bishop, HCC of the 459th Air Refueling Wing, Gregory Gifford, HCC of the 316th Wing Chaplain, Felicia Martin-Latief, HCC of the 1st Airlift Squadron, Keith McMichael, HCC of the 316th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron, and Tameka Woodruff, HCC of the 744th Communications Squadron.
