Joint Base Andrews celebrates Black History Month

By Senior Airman Lauren Main 11th Wing Public Affairs

Team Andrews will kick off Black History Month Feb. 1, 2013, to honor African-Americans contributions to history and the shaping of our nation. The theme of this year's celebration commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

The kick-off will begin Feb. 1 with a breakfast at the Andrews Community Activity Center, featuring guest speaker Dr. Roscoe Brown, a Tuskegee Airman and former commander of the 100th Fighter Squadron, Montgomery Air National Guard Base, Ala. The evening will conclude with a 70's, 80's and 90's party at the CAC, beginning at 7 p.m.

In addition to the breakfast, JBA will host numerous other events to honor these significant milestones in our history.

There will be a reenactment of the "March on Washington" on Feb. 8, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the famous civil rights movement, which was led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The march will take place on base, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Club at Andrews and conclude at 3 p.m. at the William A. Jones III building with a recital of the "I Have a Dream" speech.

Black History Month will be brought to a close with a Gala at the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling Club, hosted by the 11th Wing commander Col. Bill Knight on Feb. 22. More information about this event will be available soon.
