JSOH celebrates Marine history with newest aircraft

By Airman 1st Class Tabitha N. Haynes Air Force District of Washington Public Affairs

The 2012 Joint Service Open House is celebrating 100 years of Marine aviation May 18 - 20 on Joint Base Andrews, Md. In recognition, 72 of the 100 years were represented by Marine static displays flown in from around the country to the base.

One of the most popular aircraft at JSOH, the V-22 Osprey is the newest addition to the Marine Corps' aviation fleet.

"It is one of the fastest helicopters," said Marine Pfc. Matthew Martinez, V-22 aircraft mechanic, "because it also turns into an airplane. It has rotary wings that allow it to convert."

The aircraft is primarily used to transport Marines, but also can move cargo.

The crew gave Andrews' guests a preview of its capabilities during its show performances when it flew down the flight line as a helicopter and back using its airplane capabilities.

Viewers were also able to climb inside to get a close view of the aircraft static display and see what the crew experiences daily.
