C-5 crew showcases their mission at 2011 JSOH

By Staff Sgt. Sophia Piellusch 459th Air Refueling Wing Public Affairs

A combat tested crew from the 9th Airlift Squadron out of Dover Air Force Base, Del., display their C-5 Super Galaxy, The Spirit of Old Glory, at the 2011 Joint Service Open House here May 20. The 9th AS is under Air Mobility Command. The C-5 is one of the largest aircraft in the world and is the largest in the Air Force inventory.

"I run an aircrew, take an airplane, and move it around the system," said Col. Dave Herbison, 9th AS evaluator pilot and aircraft commander.

In February 2011, the 9th AS took part in a joint mission with the Navy and Army during a 30-day deployment to Naval Station Rota, Spain. The Army's 101st Airborne Division needed to swap out two of their aviation combat units.

"We supported an intermodal movement. The Navy was shipping helicopters from the states by boat from Rota, Spain. Where I had four C-5s waiting to pick up those helicopters and transported them into Afghanistan. Another combat aviation group was ready to come out and end their tour," Colonel Herbison said.

During the deployment, the four C-5s moved 156 helicopters and 70 passengers during a total of 77 missions.

"If a C-5 does a deployment that is the type of deployment we do," Colonel Herbison said. "They need to know how hard we are working and the service we're providing. This (the airshow) is one way of getting the story out."
