The Courses at Andrews Apple app now available for avid golfers

By Airman 1st Class Kat Lynn Justen 11th Wing Public Affairs

The Courses at Andrews introduces a new application for use with Apple mobile devices to help enhance golfers' gaming experiences on the greens here.

"The app provides valuable tools and information, both on and off the course," said Michael E. Thomas, The Courses at Andrews general manager. "Keep up on club news and events, reserve tee times, get GPS yardages for each hole and connect easily to club staff."

According to a recent press release, "The app provides live news from The Courses Facebook page and Twitter account, an interactive course map of all 54 holes and an 'augmented reality' view with GPS yardages. Users will be able to receive up to the minute information about course events, promotions, or reserve tee times directly from their hand held device."

The Courses at Andrews worked with a leading software developer to create and launch the free application for the cutting edge golfer.

"As the world of golf changes for a more technology-based golfer," said Mr. Thomas, "we felt that by involving new age technology to our amenities at no cost to our patrons and guests, we would do that much more to keep The Courses at Andrews at the front of your mind when playing golf on the only three-course facility in the Department of Defense."

The various features of the application include:
- Current club news and local weather conditions
- Facebook/Twitter feeds with latest events and photos
- Tee time reservations
- Augmented reality view with GPS yardages (iPhone 3GS or 4 required)
- Link to Google Maps for directions
- Link to club staff and contacts

"The new app is eliminating the need for GPS systems, paper yardage guides, etc.," said Mr. Thomas. "It will also add convenience for scheduling a tee time and keep you up to date with hosted events, special promotions and weather warnings, which are all streamed to your mobile devise."

In addition to a course-specific smart phone application, what makes the golf courses at Andrews unique from others across the Department of Defense?

"The Courses at Andrews is a DoD non-appropriated fund instrumentality that supports the military population and federal workforce in the National Capital Washington, D.C., metropolitan area with three championship golf courses, practice areas, club house with resale pro shop, food and beverage outlets, appointed locker rooms and fitness center," said Mr. Thomas.

The Courses at Andrews application is currently available for download on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 3.1 or later.

"We invite you to share this app and make frequent use of this benchmark golf facility," said Mr. Thomas.
