Stressful day at work? Treat yourself to a relaxing massage or reflexology

By Cristie Varvaro Air Force District of Washington Public Affairs

The Joint Base Andrews West Fitness Center offers therapeutic massage and reflexology services for customers seeking an escape from stress and relaxation.

"It is very important for me to offer this service on base," Cory Scoggins said, massage team manager. "Being former military myself, I've always been partial to the military. There is a lot of stress involved and we are proud to provide this service to them."
A variety of services are offered to customers including:

Corporate Chair Massage - 20 minute session for $35.
Deep Muscle/Connective Tissue Massage - 40 minute session for $55 or 60 minute session for $75.
Swedish Massage - 40 minute session for $55 or 60 minute session for $75.
Pre-natal Massage - 30 minute session for $45.
Sports Massage Therapy - 40 minute session for $55 or 60 minute session, $75.
Reflexology (Hands) - 30 minute session for $45.
Reflexology (Feet) - 30 minute session for $45.

The corporate chair massage is performed in a comfortable massage chair designed to relax the body. The Fitness Center also offers a mobile unit for individuals who are not able to be present for this service; however, there must be a minimum of five customers. Each session lasts approximately ten minutes and assists with stress management.

Available to expectant mothers, the pre-natal massage uses a combination of Swedish therapies and myofacial stretches to relax women in all stages of pregnancy. "This particular massage is for expectant mothers who are experiencing uncomfortable stress in their back," Mr. Scoggins said. A body cushion is used as a support system and enables the client to lie comfortably throughout the service. This massage increases relaxation and eases the tension experienced by the expectant mother.

The deep muscle/connective tissue and Swedish massages along with sports massage therapy are additional popular services offered through the West Fitness Center. Targeting patterns of tension and circulation, these massages aim to improve overall relaxation while improving circulation.

In addition to various massage therapies, Reflexology is also available to clients.

Reflexology is a hand or foot therapy that helps to de-stress what the client's body is going through. This type of therapy helps to increase circulation throughout the entire body and rids the body of toxins through the nervous system.

"There are 2,500 nerve endings in each hand and 7,200 nerve endings in each foot that directly correspond to every part of the body," said Mr. Scoggins. "Stimulation of certain areas on the hands and feet sends signals to the brain to release endorphins throughout the entire body as a means to de-stress and activate the body's natural healing mechanism."

The massage team consists of male and female therapists determined to ensure a positive experience for each client. Sessions are by appointment only and are available during the following hours:

Monday - Thursday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
