Naval Air Facility Washington, Crossroads of the Navy

By Naval Air Facility

The Naval Air Facility Washington, D.C., is one of only five Navy Reserve bases in the United States. Its objective is to ensure Navy reservists have full access to the most current weapons systems available. NAF Washington has consolidated the functions of an Air Facility, a Naval Operational Support Center, and a Readiness Command under the umbrella of NAFW to ensure Navy Reservists mobilization is effective and efficient.
The NAFW mission is to provide training and readiness support for four Navy squadrons, two aviation detachments, and 133 reserve units - consisting of more than 3,900 personnel.

NAFW is more than just an example of how Active-Reserve integration works. According to CAPT Marco Cromartie, Commanding Officer of NAFW, "The very success of the Navy today and in the coming decades depends on innovation and transformation, similar to what we've experienced at NAFW over the last two years."

Along with 120 full-time support personnel assigned to NAFW, Assistant Reserve Programs Director Lt. Cmdr. Cheryl Hawthorne oversees all actions required to ensure individuals and units are ready for worldwide deployment. "We are very fortunate here at NAFW. The Navy demands a surge force that is ready to augment on short notice, and we can respond to that demand without delay because our reservists train like they fight each and every day, most operating side-by-side with their Active Component counterparts in the NCR," said Commander Hawthorne.

Sailors from NAFW are currently mobilized and serving in numerous areas across the Navy, operating side-by-side with their Active-duty counterparts and supporting Combatant Commanders worldwide.

NAFW is aligned to support mission capable units and individuals today and agile enough to evolve to meet the needs of future warfighting capabilities.
