Memorial Day falls on May 30 in the United States.
"This is a time for family and friends to get together and remember those loved ones who have passed away and to give thanks for what we have," said Airman Lora White, 316th Security Forces Squadron Crime Prevention coordinator. "We also have a chance to remember men and women, who are often overlooked for the sacrifices they make day in and day out."
"These men and women perform a job that is often thankless, yet do their job to the best of their ability and go home with a sense of pride knowing they saved lives," said Airman White. "The men and women I refer to are police officers."
President John F. Kennedy declared May 15, 1962, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week as National Police Week.
To commemorate this occasion, the 316 SFS will host numerous events during the month.
Events include a physical training challenge, along with a shooting competition sponsored by the 316 SFS Combat Arms section Wednesday, she said.
The section will also offer safety tips at the crime prevention booth at Home Traditions Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.
A formal retreat ceremony will be held Tuesday in honor of security forces members and other law enforcement officers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, said Airman White. "Please take the time to join us as we remember those who have passed away and those who protect and serve our community. The retreat ceremony will be held at the installation flag pole, at 4 p.m. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend. Park at Chapel 1, across from the Headquarters Building, Bldg. 1535.
