Andrews AFB becomes part of Air Force District of Washington

The chief of staff of the Air Force, Gen T. Michael Moseley, announced today that Andrews Air Force Base, Md. would become part of the Air Force District of Washington.

In January 2005, the CSAF reactivated AFDW to strengthen the Air Force's participation in the newly established Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region. Today's announcement furthers that vision.

"This action will further enable AFDW to organize and prepare Air Force forces to participate in joint operations in support of civilian authorities within the NCR should the need arise," said Brig. Gen. (Sel) Duane A. Jones, AFDW commander. Other components of the AFDW include Bolling AFB and Air Force personnel assigned to the Pentagon and various organizations throughout the National Capital Region.

The 89th Airlift Wing located at Andrews will be reorganized as a primary flying organization and become a tenant unit. All base operating and support functions will be aligned under the AFDW.
