AFDW/CC: uniform changes coming at "right time" for NCR Airmen

By Tech. Sgt. Chyenne A. Adams Air Force District of Washington Public Affairs

Monday, Oct. 3, Air Force District of Washington personnel will be Air Force 'blue' more often, with the implementation of a new policy for Airmen within the National Capital Region.

"Every Airman should feel a great sense of pride and espirit de corps wearing the blue uniform of the most powerful Air Force in the world. Our blues are part of our heritage and our culture as professional Airmen - it is simply the right time and the right image for our Airmen serving in the National Capitol Region," said Maj. Gen. Darren McDew, Air Force District of Washington commander.

The commander recently signed an AFDW Guidance Memorandum immediately implementing commander-directed uniform wear policies for all AFDW personnel assigned to or visiting the NCR. This is in line with the recent change the Air Force chief of staff recently approved for the wear of the uniform for Airmen serving in Headquarters Air Force (both the Air Staff and Secretary of the Air Force Staff) and assigned in the NCR.
AFDW staff and wings will be expected to wear any authorized combination of blues Monday-Thursday; ABUs, flight suits or any authorized combination of blues are allowed for wear on Fridays.

"We are still a nation at war," said McDew. "We are American Airmen and we carry a warrior mindset inside of us. The uniform we wear should reflect the job we're doing."

Airmen will wear the service dress uniform, unless directed otherwise by competent authority (i.e. AF/CC, AF/CV, AF/CVA, AFDW/CC, or appropriate public affairs or protocol office within the NCR) in the following circumstances: when officially visiting Congress or congressional offices, the White House or the Supreme Court; when officially visiting or hosting high-ranking executive branch, legislative branch or judicial branch employees; or when attending memorial honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

Also, when Airmen represent their military organization or the Air Force at an event not hosted by the Air Force or attend such an event in uniform, service dress will be considered uniform of the day for the function unless directed otherwise by competent authority. ABUs, BDUs, FDUs will normally not be worn.

Headquarters Air Force personnel assigned to the NCR will begin wearing blues on a time-phased approach that directs mandatory wear starting Jan. 1, 2012.
