JBA Promotes Sexual Assault Awareness Month

By Senior Airman Joshua R. M. Dewberry 11th Wing Public Affairs

The Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility Washington Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program is celebrating Teal Tuesday, by wearing teal every Tuesday in April. All civilian personnel are authorized to wear teal and Airmen are authorized to wear a teal colored t-shirt under both the Airman Battle Uniform and Flight Duty Uniform.

Also, on April 27, 2016, all civilian personnel on base are authorized to wear denim in recognition of Denim Day.

The Denim Day campaign was triggered after an Italian Supreme Court ruling in the 1990s. A rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, implying consent. Women in the Italian Parliament protested by coming to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. The Italian Supreme Court has since overturned their findings, and there is no longer a "denim" defense to the charge of rape.
