DCPS teachers train with USAF Band

By Senior Airman Ryan J. Sonnier 11th Wing Public Affairs

Seven members from the U.S. Air Force Airmen of Note jazz ensemble participated in a District of Columbia Public School professional development class with local music teachers at the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., Feb. 12, 2016.

The training was part of the band's Advancing Innovation through Music outreach. AIM helps build partnerships with schools to advance their educational goals and to inspire and engage students.

"[AIM] events are very rewarding," said Master Sgt. Geoffrey Reecer, Airmen of Note guitarist. "It is very inspiring to work with teachers and students, helping them grow in their music."

The band started with a musical selection for the teachers. The teachers were then instructed to create an arrangement for the band to perform. Band members worked with the teachers to provide insight and help with ideas. At the end of the exercise, the band performed different pieces based on the arrangements created.

"Expanding our partnerships helps inspire more creativity," said Raymond Mueller, DCPS music education specialist. He also said that bringing in outside resources can provide a goal for the students, allowing them to expand in their music.
