The DoD Defense Enterprise Email migration is underway for the Air Force District of Washington's headquarters staff, 11th Wing and the 844th Communications Group on Joint Base Andrews and Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, and is expected to wrap up on Jan. 24, 2014.
According to the Defense Information System Agency, DEE service provides secure email to the DoD enterprise that is designed to increase efficiency and facilitate collaboration across organizational boundaries.
The service is comparable to commercial email services. There are two key benefits of moving to the DEE: secure email access from anywhere and, as the DISA website explains, DEE creates a common platform for the DoD, allowing military members regardless of branch, geographical location or unit to find and communicate with each other without knowing the exact suffix attached to their email.
"Members will not need to have a new account created for them if they PCS or go TDY to another DEE base" said Master Sgt. Curtis Conyers, a project manager with the 744th Communication Squadron. "DEE takes the email for life initiative that was started a few years ago and takes it to the joint environment."
An added benefit of migrating to DEE is increased storage space.
"With four gigabytes, average users will have an exponential increase in storage compared to what they once had," said Conyers.
The most visible change will be in the e-mail address format.
According to 1st Lt. Freddie Johnson, Jr of the 744th Communication Squadron, the migration replaces the old first.last@afncr.af.mil email address with first.mi.last.type@mail.mil.
During the migration, an auto forward feature has been implemented to help the transition.
"While there is an auto forward for all emails sent to your afncr.af.mil email boxes, we are encouraging users to replace the addresses listed on their signature block with their new DEE address" said Master Sgt. Corinne Camacho, from 744th COMM network operations.
Teams from the 844th Commincation Group and DISA have been working to prepare military members on the installations for the migration. Each unit affected by the change has been assigned a point of contact to help with the migration.
