Big changes to Andrews Tax Center

Big changes at the tax center here this year will send many former patrons searching for other options when it comes to tax preparation services.

Due to current budget cuts, the 2014 JBA Tax Center will no longer be able to offer full-fledged tax preparation services as in years past.

The Joint Base Andrews Tax Center will be open on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Jan. 31 through April 11, in suite 2550 of the Jones building, but only for active-duty military members and their dependents who make $58,000 or less annually.

"This year, it will open on a limited basis," said Capt. Chase Gunnell, officer in charge of the tax center. "Volunteers won't be preparing taxes, they will answer questions patrons may have while preparing their own taxes online."

"Another big change is that the tax center will no longer be able to assist retirees, guardsmen or reservists," Gunnell said.

As an alternative members can file for free online at my free taxes.com. There is a specific link for JBA members.

"Fortunately, families can use many other free available resources to prepare their taxes," Gunnell said. "For instance, military one source offers a free tax filing service for members of the United States Armed Forces. Additionally, many companies offer free e-filing to the general public for federal returns."

Required tax-preparation documents include; hard copies of all W-2s/1099-Rs, interest statements, dividend statements, brokerage statements, and complete documentation for any deduction or adjustment along with a copy of last year's tax return.
