Team Andrews encouraged to have safe, fun holiday weekend

11th Wing Public Affairs

As Team Andrews gears up to celebrate Labor Day on Sept. 2, the Air Force District of Washington has declared Friday, Aug. 30, a family day, creating a four-day weekend for many who work here.

Col. Steven Franklin, cheif of safety for AFDW and the 11th Wing, urges all to have an enjoyable, but safe, long weekend.

"Historically, this weekend is one of the most dangerous of the Critical Days of Summer," Franklin said.  "We have seen more mishaps as the summer months draw to a close."

According to the National Safety Council, this is one of the most dangerous holiday weekends for drivers.

"Remember to celebrate safely," Franklin said.  "Most importantly, don't drink and drive.  If you plan to drink, have a plan to get home -- use a designated driver.  Slow down, watch out for other drivers, and don't text and drive."

The Andrews chapter of Airmen Against Drunk Driving ( 240-857-7433 ) will offer free no-questions-asked rides home for all Andrews Airmen from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., Thursday through Sunday.  The latest information will be available on their Facebook page and the Andrews mobile app.

How a Lifetime of Training Saved a Life

“You better not die; the kids would be so mad.” It’s a surreal scene. The smell of a small, old bathroom, the endless noise of security forces over the radio. A man, blue in the face, face down on the floor in a dire medical situation. And a...
