JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –
Women fulfill multiple roles throughout the course of their life. These roles influence those around them in many different ways. Women are mothers, sisters, daughters, co-workers, bosses and friends - just to name a few.
For women in the military, add a pair of combat boots as well as the title of Airman, Soldier, Marine or Sailor to the mix. The month of March commemorates women on a national scale, reminding us to appreciate and acknowledge the great things women have done throughout our civilian and military history.
"Women's History Month is an opportunity to celebrate and appreciate how advanced women have become in our society," said Maj. Tammy Mosley, 779th Medical Operations Squadron nurse. "It's also a chance to let young girls know that they can choose their own path in life and become anything they desire to be."
Things have come a long way since March 1917, when Loretta Walsh became the first woman to enlist in the military as a Yeoman (F) in the United States Navy. Today, you'll see women occupying multiple roles in both civilian and military sectors.
"I joined the military because I wanted to do my part as a citizen, but I also didn't want to sit behind a desk all day," said Capt. Margaret McCord, 1st Helicopter Squadron pilot. "I needed some adventure. If you work hard, it won't matter if you are a woman, man or Martian, you will be able to accomplish just about anything."
Today, women bring many skill sets to the military.
"One of the things I love about the military is that you're constantly exceeding your goals and setting new ones," said Mosley. "Just when you think the last one was the best, the next one is awesome! All of my milestones have been great and dear to me; joining the military, becoming a flight nurse, taking care of our wounded warriors in midair and experiencing many opportunities to lead and mentor junior members."
As the month of March closes, we recognize the women around us for both their civilian and military contributions which help us fulfill our mission each and every day.
"During Women's History Month, we commemorate their [women's] struggles, celebrate centuries of progress and reaffirm our steadfast commitment to the rights, security and dignity of women in America and around the world," said President Barack Obama during the Presidential Proclamation for Women's History Month 2012. "Today, women serve as leaders throughout industry, civil society and government. Their outstanding achievements affirm to our daughters and sons that no dream is beyond their reach."
