Andrews observes Juneteenth
Joyce Moore, Bolling Air Force Base gospel choir director, leads the Bolling Gospel Choir in song during a program observing 140th Juneteenth anniversary at Chapel III June 19. During the celebration, Andrews members were treated to food, refreshments and entertainment for the children, who played on a moon bounce in front of the chapel. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union Soldiers, led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and the enslaved were now free. The Soldiers arrived two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which became official January 1, 1863. (U.S. Air Force photo/ Bobby Jones)
