A dose of virtual reality: Pilots enhance 316th OSS helicopter simulator for training needs
These 3D printed models of the White House and Lincoln Memorial rest on a table at the SparkX Cell Innovation and Idea Center at Joint Base Andrews, Md. The models were used for the 316th Operations Support Squadron’s “Sand Table.” The table is a raised fixture filled with sand hand-formed to model the National Capital Region terrain, and a geographic map is digitally projected to track progress during missions flown in a virtual-reality simulator at the 1st Helicopter Squadron. The 3D printings are roughly an inch tall and will be added – along with the Capitol and Washington Monument – to “The Sand Table” landscape. (SparkX Cell courtesy photo)
