JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. —
A UH-1N helicopter assigned to the 1st Helicopter Squadron based at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, made a precautionary landing during a routine training flight near the Georgetown Reservoir in Washington, D.C., at approximately 9:26 p.m. on July 13.
After experiencing unusual noises and vibrations, the aircrew landed out of an abundance of caution. Displaying exceptional airmanship, the crew acted in accordance with standard procedures and followed the flight manual to land as soon as possible. Leaning on their training, they identified a clear landing zone without obstacles to ensure there would be no impact to property or the local community. They coordinated with the FAA to ensure all relevant agencies were aware of the precautionary landing, and all four crew members returned safely to Joint Base Andrews. There was no damage to the aircraft or civilian property following the landing.
A maintenance crew arrived on site and assessed the aircraft, determining the issue to be a component of the flight control system that provides ease of maneuverability for the pilot.
The crew completed repairs overnight and the aircraft successfully returned to its home station at Joint Base Andrews at approximately 6:30 a.m. this morning.
“From the landing to the repair and retrieval of the aircraft, our Airmen are highly skilled and trained to respond quickly and efficiently in situations like this,” said a Joint Base Andrews spokesperson. “We are grateful for the support from local law enforcement, and the understanding of our neighbors in the community.
