JBA kicks off 2017 air show

By Airman 1st Class Emma James 11th Wing Public Affairs

Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, kicked off the 2017 Andrews Air Show: Air and Space Expo, Sept. 15.

Friday’s kickoff event was for Department of Defense cardholders and special guests, including 2,000 students visiting from 28 schools in the mid-Atlantic region. Attendees were able to see demonstrations by the Air Force Thunderbirds, Army Golden Knights, and the Air Force F-22 Demonstration Team and an exhibit dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

“It’s quite nice,” said Ahmed Jasin, air show attendee. “I was here at the last air show two years ago and it wasn’t like this. The exhibits are really unique.”

The exhibit featured 20-30 models, displays and demonstrations. Among them were NASA’s New Horizon Model, a Space X rocket exhibit, the U. S. Air Force Academy’s robotics and interactive display, and American University’s Laser Interferometry Gravitational Wave Detector.

“I get to enlighten other people on what my part is to help with the bigger picture of the Air Force,” said Staff Sgt. Robbie Hamilton, an airmen from the 52nd Combat Communications from Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. “It makes me feel good to be able to share it.”

The air show continues through the weekend and is open to the general public Sept. 16 and 17. For more information visit www.andrewsairshow.org.
