Chapel kickstarts Spiritual Fitness Month

By Amn Noah Sudolcan 11th Wing Public Affairs

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md.-- Throughout the month of October, the JBA chapel will be focusing on one of the four pillars of Airman Fitness: The Spiritual Pillar.

The chapel kicked off Spiritual Fitness Month with a speaker series here Oct. 9.

“[We] just hope [Airmen will be] encouraged and inspired [to enhance their spiritual wellbeing],” said Maj. Jon Smithley, 11th Wing deputy chaplain. “That’s what we do on a daily basis.”

The series began with guest speaker Maj. Gen. Steven Schaick, Air Force chief of chaplains, who spoke about the importance of resiliency and wingmanship.

“I know Airmen and their families are struggling [with stress],” he said. “If we can offer a little hope [they] will be just fine.”

Each week, the chapel is scheduled to host several events for Airmen and their families on base to include a work/life balance seminar Oct. 16, a 5K race Oct. 17 and a Relationship Resiliency Day Oct. 23.

The month-long observance will conclude with Fall Fest Oct. 31 in the chapel parking lot. The event will include a Trunk-or-Treat for kids, static displays from various units around base and live music.

“I think even if we only reach a few people [these events] will be worthwhile,” Schaick added.
