Turn in your unused medications

By 48th Medical Group

The 48th Medical Group will be collecting expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at the Base Exchange and BXtra April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency Take Back initiative, the service is free and anonymous. It is an effort to properly dispose of medicines that are sometimes left in home cabinets, which can become susceptible to misuse and abuse. In addition, usual methods for disposing of unused medicines, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, pose potential safety and health hazards.

In October 2011, Americans turned in more than 377,000 pounds of prescription drugs at more than 5,300 sites operated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and nearly 4,000 state and local law enforcement partners. In its three previous Take Back events, the DEA and its partners took in almost one million pounds of pills.
