Record-setting crowds force Andrews to close in-bound air show traffic

By Senior Airman Lindsey A. Porter 11th Wing Public Affairs

Gaping mouths, bulging eyes and pointing fingers marked the expressions of 2012 Joint Service Open House guests May 19, the second day of the air show on Joint Base Andrews. By 1:15 p.m., surging crowds pushed Andrews security forces to close in-bound traffic to the installation, helping push expected weekend attendance numbers that much closer to an original 200-thousand-attendee estimate.

"We're more than pleased with the amount of people that have taken time to come out and enjoy this year's show," said Eric Sharman, 11th Wing Public Affairs chief of media operations. "If people weren't able to attend the show today, they are still able to celebrate 100 Years of Marine Corps Aviation and experience how awesome the air above Andrews will be tomorrow. Shuttle buses will be available at 8 a.m."

Additionally, tomorrow is the last time the Navy Blue Angels will perform on the installation for four years due to the demonstration team's biannual performance schedule and Andrews' new biennial air show rotation. Other aircraft performing for tomorrow's show includes: the MV-Osprey, an AV-8B Harrier, the Warrior Flight Team, the U.S. Golden Knights and an F-22 Raptor/P-51 Mustang Heritage Flight - just to name a few.

"I want to come back tomorrow," said Thari Woodward, 9, son of Terrell Woodward, Alexandria Va. resident. "The air show and the Blue Angels were awesome!"

As always, guests are encouraged to continually wear sun block and hydrate when attending the 2012 JSOH. The last shuttle bus will depart the show tomorrow at 6 p.m.

"The courtesy shown by Andrews' military personnel exceeded my expectations," said Joe Luna, New York resident and 2012 JSOH attendee. "I especially loved the acrobatics done by the Osprey and the F-22. The perfect weather just added to an amazing day. Everything was all smiles."
