United States Air Force Band Welcomes New Commander

By Senior Airman Laura Turner 11th Wing Public Affairs

Notes blasted from an ensemble of trombones March 6, welcoming fellow trombonist and previous U.S. Air Force Academy Band commander, Col. Larry Lang, as the new U.S. Air Force Band commander at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington D.C.

"This is a surreal event," said Lang. "I am so happy to be here. All of us share a common bond in our love for this nation, for the United States Air Force and for this historic band."

The band's official military life began September 24, 1941, with the formation of the Bolling Army Air Forces Band. Today, the USAF Band inspires patriotism and military service in fellow citizens, honors those who serve, and represents The U.S. Air Force and United States of America to millions worldwide much like the Army Air Forces Band.

"The band has a remarkable legacy," said Lang. "It utilizes the power of music first to support those who serve, honoring our fallen warriors. They bring dignity, precision and heritage to official events, ceremonies and parades as well as provide music for presidents and dignitaries. They also bring a little touch of home to our deployed troops."

Through the power of music, the band helps forge new bonds between the United States and the worldwide community, transcending language and connecting people. The excellence demonstrated by these professionals on stage is a reflection of the excellence carried out 24 hours a day by Airmen stationed around the globe.

"President Barack Obama recently stated that our long-term security will not come from our ability to instill fear in people, but from our capacity to speak with hope," said Lang. "Using music to speak with hope and break down barriers will help us build relationships with members of this premiere organization. We can develop and strengthen vital ties with American and foreign audiences unlike any other Air Force asset."

With a vision to serve as the most-powerful and effective communicators in the Department of Defense, the band continues to reach millions of citizens each year with uplifting programs, delivering positive messages and demonstrating Air Force excellence.

"It's been said that music can change the world because it can change people," said Lang. "The real power in music can inspire, captivate hearts and minds as well as heal and unite; especially when combined with the right message."
