JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –
With the onset of every New Year comes the anticipated, or at times dreaded, season of New-Year-resolution making. Whether one vows to lose weight, over indulge less or to finally get around to completing that daunting self improving tasker, New Year resolutions often fall by the wayside come warmer months. However, it doesn't have to be like this!
Along with being the premiere Air Force installation on the East Coast, Joint Base Andrews encompasses the facilities that can help its members keep their resolution and ultimately achieve their New Year goals.
If you're looking to knuckle down on academics in 2012, the Andrews Education Center is able to cater to each member's specific needs. The center currently has two full-time education counselors on staff, ready and willing to help those seeking higher education. Additionally, Andrews service members may enroll in Tuition Assistance and take classes at any number of education facilities located in the center.
"This year, I plan on finishing my Masters in Counseling degree," said Master Sgt. Heidi L. Huff, 1st Airlift Squadron section chief of training and sexual assault resource counselor. "At least that's the 2012 goal."
Team Andrews members looking to improve their physical wellness should check out the West Fitness Center for a complete listing of aerobics and wellness classes. The center also houses Andrews' Health and Wellness Center (HAWC). Members can make appointment at the HAWC and learn about proper health and nutrition with counselors who will detail fitness plans to fit an individual's specific needs.
"I'm not a believer in resolutions, but I do have a goal to increase my physical fitness and decrease my circumference," said Senior Airman Torey Griffith, 11th Wing Public Affairs specialist. "I plan to utilize some of the classes like TacFit and Spin at the West Fitness Center to help me reach my goals."
Other services offered on Andrews include an array of free financial management classes that can aid those whose resolutions are to become more monetarily sound. The Andrews Military and Family Support Center (MFSC) offers one-on-one and class consultations to those seeking money-management advice.
"For individuals and couples on Andrews, the MFSC offers consultation on most personal finance matters, such as debt reduction, setting up a family budget, establishing savings goals, Thrift Savings Plan and credit," said Kevin Hamilton, MFSC financial educator. "Additionally, we offer monthly/quarterly classes on an array of financial topics through a partnership with Andrews Federal Credit Union. Call for upcoming class dates and times."
