BOWIE, Md. –
After a series of vigorous inspections, one of the largest air shows in the world and an operations tempo unlike any other installation, Team Andrews members and their families kicked-back and enjoyed a good old American baseball game, courtesy of the Bowie Baysox and the Navy Federal Credit Union.
The Bowie Baysox, a minor league team for the Baltimore Orioles, donated more than 2700 tickets to the Joint Base Andrews Outdoor Recreation office, who, along with first sergeants and leadership from all branches on base, distributed them among servicemembers, their families and DoD employees here.
"It was great," said Amanda Scimone, a Team Andrews member who attended the game. "The weather was cool and comfortable after the sun went down. And the company was great!"
Team Andrews Air Force, Navy and Marines members threw out the first pitches and the Chief's Own United States Air Force Honor Guard color guard presented the Colors at the opening ceremonies.
The game went in favor of the guests, the Flying Squirrels from Richmond, Va., but the margin of victory was kept close thanks to the skills of the Baysox team, who had been on a seven game winning streak.
With five scoreless innings and a both teams rallying for the win in the 8th and 9th innings, fans were treated to quite a game.
The event, which is scheduled to become a yearly treat for servicemembers, not only offered Team Andrews members a way to relax, but another avenue to build good relations with the surrounding community.
"Given all the hard work that's been done, this was really a great way to take care of our entire joint team; Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines," said 2nd Lieutenant Mark Flannery, 11th Wing Public Affairs officer and one of the event's major coordinators. "The fact that we also got to welcome a great community partner into our family made this a home run for everybody."
