Airmen attend George C. Marshall foundation award dinner

By Senior Airman Torey Griffith 11th Wing Public Affairs

Two members of the Chief's Own attended an award ceremony here for Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, who received the George C. Marshall Foundation Award for her many accomplishments during her distinguished career.

Airman 1st Class Lindsey Beadle, 11th Wing Public Affairs specialist and Airman 1st Class Daniel Burkhardt, 11th Wing Public Affairs broadcaster, were selected to attend the event at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. on June 2.

According to a George C. Marshall Foundation Award press release, Secretary Clinton was chosen to receive this award "for her dignity and integrity of character, for her devotion to creating and perpetuating free and democratic institutions, and for promoting appropriate economic development that will allow them to flourish."

Both Airmen said they admired Secretary Clinton's distinguished accomplishments throughout her career.

"I felt privileged to have the opportunity to meet and speak with such an influential and important world leader," Airman Burkhardt said. "I decided before I went to the dinner that if given the opportunity I would ask Madame Secretary about leadership and for some tips about being a leader."

He got his chance.

"I conducted a pseudo interview," Airman Burkhardt said. "I asked her what she could tell me about leadership and what it means to be an effective leader. She told me there isn't a hidden secret about leadership, but the best way to become a good leader is to find an organization or cause that you are truly dedicated to and to surround yourself with people who challenge you. It takes a lot of shoe leather and leading by example to be an effective leader."

Airman Beadle, an admirer of Secretary Clinton's accomplishments, said the opportunity was a once in lifetime.

"I cannot be more thankful to of had the opportunity to attend the George C. Marshall Foundation Award dinner," she said. "I think Airman Burkhardt would agree with me in saying that night was a truly life-changing experience."
