Andrews servicemembers welcome IG team

By Staff Sgt. Kris Levasseur 11th Wing Public Affairs

Servicemembers of the Air Force District of Washington, 11th Wing and all of Team Andrews are pleased to welcome the arriving Inspector General team who will be evaluating them during the Compliance Inspection beginning Sunday.

By definition, Air Force CI's are conducted to assess areas mandated by law, as well as mission areas identified by senior Air Force and MAJCOM leadership that are critical or important to the health and performance of the unit. Failure to comply with established directives in these areas could result in significant legal liabilities, penalties or mission impacts.

"The IG team will arrive at Joint Base Andrews on June 4, which is the official start of the CI," said Master Sgt. Dwayne Harrigan, 11th WG Plans and Inspections office self inspection and compliance chief.

During the CI, the IG team will evaluate each common core compliance area, executive order or applicable directive. These areas include intelligence oversight, transition assistance programs, voting assistance programs, sexual harassment education and prevention and technology protection as well as individual work center compliancy.

"The purpose of inspections like the CI are to ensure that our Airmen are doing what they need to in accordance with all policies and procedures put in place by the Department of Defense and the Air Force," said Sergeant Harrigan. "As long as everyone is doing their job the way they are supposed to, they should be fine."

Sergeant Harrigan added that following checklists and established office procedures will be instrumental during the inspection.

"Some organizations may have a few discrepancies, but our Airmen should look at those issues as a learning experience," said Sergeant Harrigan. "Any issues found by the IG team should be looked at as an area that we can work to improve."

Sergeant Harrigan also offered a little advice to anyone providing information to the IG team.

"If you don't know the answer to their question off the top of your head, don't be afraid to say 'I don't have that answer at this time, let me look it up' and pull out the corresponding AFI or operating instruction," he said. "If you try to tap dance around a question, they will catch you on it. It's best to be honest and answer their questions to the best of your ability."

For the past several months, AFDW and 11th WG Airmen have been verifying their readiness by performing multiple exercise scenarios and rigorous self-inspections.

"The 11th Wing's Airmen have dedicated countless hours to ensure our organization is poised for success during the CI," said Col. Ken Rizer, 11th WG/Joint Base Andrews commander. "The success of this inspection will not only reflect on all our hard work but the combined efforts of everyone at Joint Base Andrews that has supported us during an intense and very thorough preparation."
