JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –
The 2011 Joint Service Open House and Airshow continues here through May 22d. More than 32 static aircraft displays and 14 aerial performers are slated to be present during this year's air show. Free admission and abundant in American history, paying a visit to the air show this weekend could be one of the most patriotic experiences one could have this weekend.
Along with the aircraft displays and performers present at this year's air show, American military heritage can be found a 2011 JSOH exhibit completely devoid of aircraft entirely.
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War display tent, located between hangar two and three on the flightline, invites all 2011 JSOH visitors to experience an aspect of American military history during venues such as this weekend's air show.
"Before aircraft power, before tanks and submarines, we were here," Mr. Eddie Roberts, SUVCW War commander said. "People often forget their past and where they came from which is why an air show like this is so important and why we're (SUVCW) here. We remind all guests to the air show of an American past that goes back a little further then what can be found at other static and air displays."
According to the SUVCW official website, www.suvcw.org, the SUVCW is a patriotic and educational organization, similar to the Grand Army of the Republic. Founded on November 12, 1881 and incorporated by Act of Congress on Aug. 20, 1954, the SUVCW is the legal heir to and representative of the Grand Army of the Republic.
The SUVCW also offers patriotic recollections to school and community groups through live reenactments of historic American Civil War battles and battle recounts. Through these key battle player reenactors, this SUVCW mission of informing the public of an often-forgotten aspect of military history is in full swing during the 2011 JSOH.
"This is why we (SUVCW) wanted to come out and showcase this weekend," Mr. Eddie Roberts said. "We not only wanted to pay tribute and respect to the men and women servicemembers who make our current freedom possible, but we also wanted to remind everyone in American (military or not) of their own personal history."
Membership into the SUVCW is coveted and lengthy. SUVCW members must be a male descendant of a Soldier, Sailor, Marine or member of the Revenue Cutter Service of the U.S. who honorably served. Members must be at least 14 years of age.
