11th Wing Safety Office - Alcohol and the Air Force

By 11th Wing Safety Office

Good news - from October 3, 2010, through February 25, 2011, the Air Force had zero motorcycle-related fatalities.

More good news - it's Spring! The weather is warming up, flowers are in bloom and getting oneself outside is a priority. This time of year, motorcycles come out of the garage, people head out on bicycles and they also take long walks in the sunshine.

But while enjoying this change in weather, it only takes one careless mistake to ignite disastrous results.

For example, in fiscal year 2011, five out of 11 car/motorcycle/bicycle/pedestrian fatalities in the Air Force were caused by alcohol-related factors. Six of these incidents have toxicology reports that are still outstanding and the average blood alcohol content of those individuals involved in these fatalities was 0.18 percent. So, 100 percent of all completed toxicology fatality reports this fiscal year have shown positive alcohol involvement.

Let's do our part to prevent anymore alcohol-related fatalities. Following the steps below will not only help prevent an alcohol-related mishap, but could also potentially save a life.

- Make a plan.
- Have a designated driver.
- Never ever drink and drive.
- Be a good Wingman, take responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others.
