Retiree Activities Office column: week of Dec. 3 - Dec. 10

By Ron Teufel Retiree Activities Office director

I.D. Card Renewal
You can get your Military Retiree identification card renewed at the Military Personnel Section in building 1414. In the olden days we called this Pass and ID. The building is located near the Fitness Center, or "Base Gym" to us older retirees. Building 1414 is located between Menoher Drive and Arkansas Rd. The MPS is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone mumber is 301-981-1776.

Once you are in building 1414, you will get service just by logging in at the customer service workstation and await contact from your appropriate service representative according toyour identified need. The wait times can vary. The MPS does more than renew I.D. Cards. We retirees must be patient with the process. Once you are called by the customer service person the average service time for an ID card renewal is seven to 10 minutes.

Be sure to bring two forms of identification, primary and secondary.
Primary I. D. can be:
Military Family Member ID Card and Sponsor DoD ID Card
U.S. Coast Guard, Merchant Mariner Card
Photo ID issued by federal, state, or local government
Passport
Driver's license
There are other forms of primary I.D. See the MPS for other forms.

Secondary I.D. can be:
Social Security card
Voters registration card
Birth certificate
Driver's license
Childcare or nursery school record
Clinic, doctor or hospital record
School record or report card
Canadian driver's license
Native American tribal document
School ID with a photo
Foreign National ID with photograph
Foreign passport
These are not all of the secondary I.D.'s. See MPS for other forms.

Unfortunately, MPS cannot accept the following items as forms of identification: bank/credit cards, vehicle registration, and insurance cards various membership cards.

Helpful Website
Have you tried this website lately: http://www.benefits.gov/ ? The site is also available in Spanish, at http://es.benefits.gov/. There are several sections of interest to military retirees such as: benefits, newsroom, advocates, about and help.

Benefits.gov is the official benefits website of the U.S. government. The website informs citizens of benefits they may be eligible for. The website provides information on how to apply for assistance. If you do not have access to a computer you may call the National Contact Center at 1-800-FED-INFO (1-800-333-4636), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time, to speak to an information specialist for additional government information.

Diabetes Update
People who lose even a little weight and exercise consistently can reduce their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Knowing the facts regarding diabetes management will assist you in keeping yourself on the right track to deal with the disease. See your doctor. Seek help from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
