VA Track upgrades for new PT test requirements

By Airman 1st Class Bahja J. Jones 11th Wing Public Affairs

The Virginia Track, located on Virginia Avenue, is currently closed for resurfacing that began Oct. 15 and is scheduled to remain closed for six weeks.

The project was implemented after a request from Anthony Alcala, 11th Force Support Squadron complex director of fitness and sports, and Robert Gonzalez, 11 FSS assistant complex director of fitness and sports, was submitted for the track to be resurfaced for the physical training test.

It has been quite some time since the track has been resurfaced, and the new PT test requirements presented a great opportunity to make improvements, Mr. Gonzalez said. The fitness center received the funding for this project in support of the new PT testing requirements for the Air Force. The Joint Base Andrews fitness director is responsible for the fitness assessment cell personnel who test servicemembers in the National Capital Region.

The improvements on the Virginia Track include softer rubber material to provide a more comfortable running surface and decrease injuries, Mr. Gonzalez said.

"Our mission is to prevent any injuries from prolonged running on hard surfaces. This will prevent any joint injuries from happening and keep our military ready for their missions down range," Mr. Gonzalez said.

Mr. Gonzalez also indicated that there will be a square area added to the center that will be designated for the push-up and sit-ups portion of the fitness assessment.

During the resurfacing project, the Andrews FAC will conduct all PT tests indoors at the West Fitness Center. As the FAC conducts PT testing, the tactical track area will be closed. Volleyball and basketball will be prohibited during test times.

The park near the track is also closed due to the construction though there will be no changes made to the park. Any questions regarding the park are to be directed to base housing, Mr. Alcala said.

"I want to thank our leadership and the [11th Civil Engineer Squadron] who supports the Fitness Center in all our projects. We support more than 350,000 patrons annually throughout the Nation Capital Region," Mr. Gonzalez said. "The Airman's mission is to 'Fly, Fight and Win.' Our mission is to prepare them to be 'Fit to Fight and Win.'"
