JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –
The new 11th Wing is scheduled to host its first Sports Day Oct. 8 at various locations throughout the installation.
Sports Day kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at the Military Personnel Flight track for calisthenics and opening comments from Colonel Ken Rizer, 11th Wing/Joint Base Andrews commander. Following Col. Rizer's comments, everyone will depart the track for a 5K race where points will be awarded based on what squadrons' personnel and leadership finishes first.
Once the 5K concludes, the Sports Day participants will break down into four events which all begin at 9 a.m. The events are 3-on-3 basketball, one-pitch softball, volleyball and a combat challenge. Also, at 11 a.m. a commanders versus first sergeants pushups and sit up challenge is scheduled.
Each event will give points to the teams that finish in the top ten, with 50 points going to the team in first and five points to the team that finishes tenth.
"Our goal for Sports Day is to have as many squadrons and members participate and enjoy the day," said Casey O'Donnell, West Fitness Center fitness director. "We have provided different and fun events for members to enjoy. One of the events that we'd love to highlight is the combat challenge. This event will have a team of four (three men and one female) compete in a series of functional movements i.e. tire flips, burpees, litter carry, and pushups, and then the team will double time it down to the small arms range and conduct a shoot with small arms instructors. The shoot will be 10 rounds from 15 yards. The overall winner of the combat challenge will be the team with the best combined score on the shoot, and the best overall time at the functional aspects of the event," Mr. O'Donnell said.
Following those four events, at noon there will be an awards ceremony at the MPF track. The squadron that finishes with the most points in all the events will be deemed the overall winner and will win the "Commanders Cup," an annual award held by the squadron that has the best overall Sports Day.
At that time, Famous Dave's Barbeque will also provide lunch courtesy of the Andrews Chaplains.
A lot of hard work went into making this year's Sports Day a fun experience for all those taking part in it.
"I'd really like to thank Master Sgt. Robert Corradi, Combat Arms Training and Maintenance flight chief, for helping put the combat challenge together, as well as all the staff of the Fitness Center for working on putting this day together," Mr. O'Donnell said.
It is this sort of event that highlights the 11 WG's commitment to showcase the best of the Air Force in the spirit of competition and teamwork.
