JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. –
The Joint Base Andrews Catholic community announces a new Twilight Mass on Sunday evenings slated to begin at 7 p.m. Sunday in Chapel 1.
The new Sunday time is geared toward Active Duty members to accommodate their busy weekend schedules.
Father Mike Siconolfi, 316th Wing Chaplain, said he hopes that the atmosphere of this liturgy will be a peaceful time for prayerful reflection to close one week and begin another.
The Mass will be less than an hour long, and sermons will be relevant to younger servicemembers.
The overall tone of the Mass is going to be mellow and laid back, said Father Siconolfi.
"The shape of the service is meant to be a quiet time in a busy week that will allow those attending to get themselves squared away with the Lord," said Father Siconolfi.
"I hope to use the darkness of twilight and candles to create the atmosphere that allows people to connect with God and with one another in both faith and doubt," he said.
The key to the success of the Mass is dependent upon feedback from those in attendance, communicating what aids in the development of their relationship with God. This feedback will be used to evolve the format and style of the service throughout the fall season.
When Father Siconolfi was in college, he said the most popular Mass was held at 9 p.m. The late service was the most convenient for the students busy weekends schedules.
Later in the fall he intends to feature a mellow jazz trio in the style of Miles Davis or Mary Lou Williams at the Mass, he said. Volunteers will be needed to help organize and contribute to the music for the service.
The Twilight Mass will be in addition to the more formal Mass held Saturday at 5:15 p.m.
