Refractive Surgery can enhance more than your looks!

By Melanie Moore 79th MDW

Freedom from glasses or contacts can have a great operational benefit in austere environments such as Iraq and Afghanistan. The United States Air Force (USAF) Refractive Surgery Program exists to enhance the operational readiness of aviators and warfighters by reducing their dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

"Refractive Surgery at the Warfigher Eye Center at Malcolm Grow Medical Center (MGMC) has been at full-time operation since May 2009, after an extensive upgrade to the laser suite. We provide state of the art technology and treatment, performing both PRK and LASIK surgery. PRK and LASIK are procedures that use a laser to precisely sculpt and reshape the cornea of the eye to correct for refractive error," said Maj. Megan McChesney, ophthalmologist for the 779th Medical Group.

"We treat active duty personnel from all branches of the military, once they have their commander's authorization to proceed with surgery," explained Maj. McChesney.
An informational briefing is held every Friday at 1300 at the Warfigher Eye Center at MGMC (3rd floor of the hospital), which covers the specifics of how to apply for surgery and the different procedures. For more information, visit the website: https://kx.afms.mil/andrewsrs.
