Be “Safe and Sane” this holiday weekend

By Staff Sgt. Thomas Scheide 316th Security Forces Squadron

With the upcoming Independence Day celebration rapidly approaching, what fireworks you can and cannot have is always a question. Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Joint Base Andrews abide by the "Safe and Sane" standard for the use of personal fireworks. "Safe and Sane" means fireworks that do not fly or explode. Some examples of these are; fountains, sparklers, wheels, smoke and snake items, strobes, ground spinners, novelty fireworks that do not travel, snappers and caps. Some examples of prohibited fireworks are; firecrackers (of any kind), rockets, missiles, mines, shells, aerial cakes, flying spinners and roman candles. Although many of these items are perfectly legal in many states, it is illegal to purchase them in other states and transport them back to Maryland, Virginia or Washington D.C. If you witness anyone utilizing these or any other fireworks in an unsafe manner, do not hesitate to contact the 316th Security Forces Squadron at 301-981-2001 or your local police if off base. For more specific details and a list of more prohibited/non-prohibited examples log on to www.fireworks.com and search by state.
