PB&J financial seminars make cents and sandwiches

By Pacifica Chehy Capital Flyer staff writer

The Airman and Family Readiness Center is presenting monthly "PB&J Financial Workshops" to teach how to ease the financial strain on Joint Team Andrews pocketbooks.

"The monthly PB&J series will focus on hot financial topics affecting the military community and each class will be full of tips and tricks to help individuals make smart financial decisions," said Kelly Stewart, 316th Force Support Squadron A&FRC community readiness consultant. "Attendees will enjoy a free lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches - made their favorite way."

Many classes will be taught by the A&FRC staff of financial gurus, though guest speakers will be featured from time to time.

"The classes are free and provide easily accessible education on one of the most important topics we face daily - our money - and the information provided can help attendees both repair current financial stressors and prevent unnecessary financial burdens in the future," Ms. Stewart explained.

Ms. Stewart said financial readiness is all about mission readiness.

"Financial management has always been a crucial issue for those who are employed by the military because it is so closely tied to our ability to complete the mission," she said. "Financial stress creates higher rates of mission failure when we are unable to be completely focused. It also threatens those valuable security clearances we hold that enable us to access the information we need to complete the mission. If we do not closely guard our financial matters, we can easily succumb to the common mistakes that cost the military and the military member dearly."

Classes are open to Active Duty members, spouses, retirees, Department of Defense civilians, contractors and anyone else with base access. Future financial topics include a car-buying workshop, repairing and protecting credit seminar, debt management and the Thrift Savings Plan.

Each class will be at the A&FRC, located at 1191 Menoher Dr.
