ANDREWS AFB, Md. –
Team Andrews volunteers who go above and beyond were honored recently at the Airman and Family Readiness Center's second Annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony, hosted by the 316th Wing commander, Col. Steven M. Shepro, Monday.
This year's theme, "Celebrating People in Action," captured the sentiment of the event.
"Volunteer recognition is so important, especially to recognize those individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities," said Master Sgt. Glynis Fresia, Airman and Family Readiness Center NCO in charge. "Although volunteering is a selfless effort, there are lots of benefits to be received by helping in the Andrews Community. Volunteers help make the mission happen at Andrews and we couldn't do it without them." Team Andrews volunteers donated approximately 17,000 hours.
Several groups and individuals were recognized for their volunteer efforts, including the Base Retired Activities Volunteer Organization, of which Colonel Shepro said, "In recognizing the person who will receive the Volunteer Excellence Award, I must say BRAVO! BRAVO is an acronym for Base Retired Activities Volunteer Organization. If you have ever required care at the Malcolm Grow Medical Center, I am sure you have been assisted by a member of the BRAVO Group. These volunteers can be found in practically every nook and cranny of the hospital providing assistance to patients and staff alike."
This year's recipient of the Volunteer Excellence Award wished to remain anonymous. This person has volunteered at Andrews for over 20 years, and started volunteering in the base hospital providing aid to patients and hospital staff. They now serve as the coordinator of the BRAVO group.
"To this person, I say 'BRAVO.' Thanks for the memories and excellent contributions you have made over the years. All of our lives are better because of your service," Colonel Shepro said.
Other honored recipients include Mandy Lepore, Airman's Attic manager and wife of Staff Sgt. John Lepore, 316th Security Forces Squadron combat arms instructor. She volunteered over 1,100 hours in 2008 and has been with the Airman's Attic for over six years. In addition, Da'Jon Brandon, a senior at Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School and son of Master Sgt. Wednesday Jones of the Eastern Recruiting Center, volunteered over 200 hours at the Youth Center with projects, events and assisting the youth in their daily activities, including homework.
Sergeant Fresia emphasized that volunteering not only helps the Andrews community, but can also promote personal development.
"If you are between jobs or have time on your hands, you will meet great people, add to your resume, and most importantly, feel good about making a difference," she said.
Daina Hewlett, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness assistant and event coordinator said, "The ceremony was a wonderful success, everyone had a wonderful time."
As volunteer coordinator, Ms. Hewlett added, "This program is very dear to my heart. I call it my baby. I enjoy going to the different agencies and speaking with the volunteers. They do an outstanding job. With all they do, I could not be happier knowing what wonderful people I am associated with."
