ANDREWS AFB, Md. –
The Air Force Association Thomas W. Anthony chapter hosted its annual awards luncheon at The Club at Andrews Dec. 3.
The guest speaker, Maj. Gen. Ralph Jodice, Air Force District Washington commander, commended the AFA members for their support of uniformed military members and for their perseverance in moving the Air Force ahead. "The AFA supports our military members, their families and our Air Force. The goals you have to inform the American public, advocate the need for the Air Force and your support and education of our troops is unmatched. For that we are deeply indebted."
The general gave a brief overview of the mission of AFDW and the roles and missions of the Air Force under the direction of Chief of Staff General Norman Schwartz and Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donelly. Air Force top issues in 2009 include prioritizing the nuclear mission, partnering with our joint and coalition partners to win the War on Terror, develop and care for Airmen, modernization of the air and space force and acquisition excellence. He also highlighted the AFA 2009 goals to educate the American public, advocate the need for an Air Force, and support education for our troops. He noted that the AF top issues and the AFA's goals were in sync with each other. "It's a win-win situation when we all work together," said the general.
After his presentation awards were given to several members for their support of the AFA. Mr. Chris Thompson received the Medal of Merit from Mr. Bob Riot, Maryland State AFA President and Mr. Charles Suraci, AFA Thomas W. Anthony Chapter President. Two chapter members were selected as the AFA Member of the Year for 2008. Retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Joe Handy and retired Air Force Master Sgt Thomas (Sam) Bass were selected for their outstanding support of the local chapter. Several AFA members were also recognized with certificates of appreciation for contributions to the local chapter and for their work with the Joint Service Open House.
The AFA meets monthly here at Andrews AFB and is always looking for new members. Membership is open to all servicemembers, DOD civilians and spouses.
