Enlisted Spouses Club: where every spouse counts

By Pacifica Chehy Capital Flyer Staff Writer

The Andrews Enlisted Spouses Club will hold its first meeting Saturday at the Airman and Family Readiness Center from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The AESC's first meeting serves as a meet and greet for spouses interested in joining the group.

"We are currently re-establishing the AESC," said Pat Davis, wife of Chief Master Sgt. James Davis, 316th Wing command chief. "The AESC is a private, non-profit organization that unites enlisted spouses of military personnel -- whether active duty, reserve, guard or retired -- from all branches of service."

The AESC's mission is not just for social purposes, but for making a difference in the lives of its members, their families, and the community, as well.

"The purpose of the AESC is to promote interesting social and cultural activities for its members, and to enhance in every way possible, the welfare of the military member, their families, our base community, and the surrounding communities," said Mrs. Davis.  "We endeavor to support and give back to the community in many ways such as fundraisers and scholarships to qualified military dependents. We also recognize the value of life-long relationships that are fostered in organizations like the AESC and extend an invitation to all enlisted spouses to become part of our family."

Spouses may have the impression that spouses clubs are not for them. "The biggest misconception about the ESC may be the idea that the AESC is for the 'seasoned' military spouse -- that is definitely not the case," said Mrs. Davis. "The motto of the AESC is 'Every Spouse Counts.' It is our wish that each enlisted spouse understands they have something of value to offer the AESC and we look forward to receiving ideas and experiences from every enlisted spouse."

The AESC offers a great venue and serves as a resource for new spouses transitioning to the military way of life and for those spouses recently arriving to Andrews or the national capital region, Mrs. Davis said.

Anyone married to an enlisted military member from any branch of service whether active duty, reserve, guard or retired is eligible to join the AESC. Children are welcome to attend tomorrow's meet and greet. To RSVP, call the Airman and Family Readiness Center at 301-981-7087.
