The Washington Monument and the Capitol building served as a panoramic backdrop, while an autumn breeze animated the U.S. and Air Force flags positioned atop the Air Force Memorial.

The day had particular significance for Master Sgt. Carlos Ramirez as he stood at attention in the background, amidst a sea of gathered family members and friends in Arlington, Va., Sept. 19.

Sergeant Ramirez, an Air National Guard Readiness Center lead air transportation career field manager, was waiting to be retired by his son, Capt. Daniel Ramirez 1st Helicopter Squadron instructor pilot, after 25 years of service.

During the opening ceremony, Capt. Ramirez spoke briefly about his father's influence on his military career. "Seeing everything that my dad accomplished and stood for, was my main reason for joining the Air Force," he said.

"He wanted me to come into the Air Force as an officer. He wouldn't allow me to come in any other way," said Capt. Ramirez, a five-year Air Force veteran. "During my childhood, he was a steady source of guidance," said Capt. Ramirez, referring to his fathers support of his sports activities.

"During my military career, he's been my mentor," Capt. Ramirez continued. "So when he asked me to retire him, it was very special to me. It's not everyday that you get to retire someone as a captain, and on top of that it being your own father," said Capt. Ramirez proudly. "My dad always gave me a positive image of the Air Force."

During the awards portion of the ceremony, Sergeant Ramirez received the Meritorious Service Medal for playing a vital role while working in the Air National Guard Crisis Action Cell. It was here that he coordinated the movement of 10.3 short tons of supplies and 32,000 Air National Guard personnel for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita relief operations.

Another highlight of the ceremony came when Sergeant Ramirez was honored with a salute from a 1st Helicopter Squadron pilot during a helicopter flyover. After receiving several accolades and being officially retired by his son, Master Sgt. Ramirez took center stage to give a heart-felt retirement speech.

He faced his son and said, "Son, there is no greater love, no greater pride then what I feel for you! I thank the Lord everyday for you," said Sergeant Ramirez. "I've enjoyed following your growth ... from the little league fields to the parade field at the United States Air Force Academy. The greatest experience in my life is being your father and you continually teach me each day the true meaning of honor! I wish you Holly and Lillian the same opportunity for happiness you have brought to me,"added Sergeant Ramirez.

"On May 28, 2003, I stood in front of you and was honored with your first salute upon your graduation from the Air Force Academy. Today, September 19, 2008, I stand before you, with great respect, honor and praise to give you my last salute. Capt. Daniel Ramirez your Papi, thanks you," said Sergeant Ramirez as he rendered his final salute. "You are my greatest accomplishment!"
